Franklin Institute Tour Information

The Franklin Institute tour facilitator has been kind enough to move our tour start time up to 9am so we can enjoy the full experience before folks have to leave for the airport. Here’s our final schedule:

  • 9:00  - 9:30 AM:   Group arrives at the Institute and enters the Group Entrance and meet Rosanna and will store their luggage
  • 9:30  - 11:30 AM:    Group will be escorted to meet Exhibit and Program Developer, Kristin Qualls in Memorial Hall in front of the BFNM statute;
  • 11:30   -  12:00 Noon:   Group will be escorted to have lunch in the Franklin foodworks;
  • 12:00 – 2:00 PM:   Group will be escorted to meet Senior Curator John Alviti in the Patent Library for a “white glove” experience; and
  • 2:00 PM:   Program concludes and Group will be free to roam museum on their own or  leave for flights, etc. Those who stored luggage will be escorted to retrieve.

See you there!

Beyond the Bell(s)

Be sure to check out (and bookmark!) the great new blog from the Philadelphia Hospitality Committee, Beyond the Bell(s)! “Every week we will update readers on some of the best local restaurants, cafes, museums and destinations in the Philadelphia region. We have tasked ourselves to think beyond the typical tourist destinations. You all know about the historic Liberty Bell and the wonderful Franklin Institute. Here you will learn about where to get the best Philly Cheesesteak (and how to order!), where to catch a baseball game (besides Citizens Bank Park), and how to get around like a local.”

Thanks so much to Peggy, Lauren, Louise and Sharice – what a great way to share the skinny on Philly!

One Division, One Book

One Division, One Book

Join us Monday, June 13 in the late afternoon to discuss our Book Group selection for this year, “Packing for Mars: The Curious Science of Life in the Void” by Mary Roach.  If you’d like to join in the Book Group discussion, let Julie Arendt know; the details of where and when we’re meeting are forthcoming!

Computer Science Roundtable Speakers

I will be moderating the Computer Science Roundtable at SLA this year.

Previous calls for CSRT topics resulted in this draft agenda:
- Data curation presentations (no more than two)
- Discussion regarding CS being incorporated into SciTech
- Open forum
Note: I will ask for IEEE and ACM reps to be available to answer questions

I have contacted a number of individuals that are versed on the current trends and challenges regarding data curation and about how library and non-library organizations can support stewardship programs, etc. I have not yet been successful in securing speakers.

I am looking for people that are equipped to discuss data curation trends AND are attending SLA. Any suggestions or volunteers?

PAMwide Roundtable

PAMWide Roundtable PAMwide had a new format this year, a series of short presentations. Flora Grabowska talked about open access publishing initatives; Susan Koskinen talked about SCOAP3; Pat Viele discussed information fluency in physics; then Tony O’Rourke updated us about the IOPScience developments. (Tony’s always a fun speaker.) After the break, Mandy Taha, the 2008 International Award winner, spoke about science in Egypt and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. (Be sure to look for her handouts on the SLA web site!) To round out the session, Joe Murphy talked about Library 2.0 issues. Well done to Bill and all the speakers!
