SLA Global 2000 Conference, Brighton, UK, 16-19 October 2000
PROGRAM ABSTRACT: Equity of Access to Information Resources: Problems and Possible Solutions in Developing Countries.
Tuesday, October 17, Afternoon Session T6
Sponsored by the Physics-Astronomy-Mathematics Division, Special Libraries Association.
The amount of information available via the Internet is growing at an astronomical rate. As more publishers switch to an electronic format for journals and other publications, the problem of equity in access to this information for researchers and libraries in developing countries is profound. Although this discussion will focus on scientific information, the same problems exist within other subject areas as well. Panelists will discuss the current situation and possible solutions for equity in information access.
International innovative projects will be presented. The view of publishers — how they see their role in providing answers to these difficult questions — will also be included.
